The Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities is now accepting applications/nominations for the 2018 Gerry Bertier Scholarship Award and the 2018 John Duty Collins III Outstanding Advocate for Persons with Disabilities Award 2018. The Gerry Bertier Scholarship of $1000 is awarded to an Alexandria resident or a student at a school located in the City of Alexandria who has a physical, sensory or cognitive disability and who is pursuing post-secondary education. Teaching Children Essential Social Skills

This upbeat and interactive workshop will share the life skills necessary to optimize the happiness and health of all children, whether they are your own or those you work with or teach. Doctors Christopher Haley & Lindsey Luedtke will provide simple and straightforward techniques for teaching these important skills, including a discussion of the 7 essential social skills that all successful people possess. All strategies will be solution-focused and immediately implementable. Dr. Haley is the owner of Psychological & Life Skills Associates and The Social Skills Center, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years’ experience, and the author of Peer Process Social Skills Groups: A Treatment Manual for Mental health Therapists, Behavioral Specialists, and School Professionals. Dr. Luedtke is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist specializing in adolescent and adult individual, couples, and group psychotherapy.
There is no charge to attend; however, pre-registration is required and limited to 60. Childcare is available by pre-registration only.

Initiated in NY in 2007, the festival presents award winning films by and about people with disabilities. ReelAbilities events have been held in over a dozen cities in North America and Canada.
The Northern Virginia ReelAbilities Film Festival, powered by the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia, launched in 2011. Run out of the J’s Cultural Arts Department, in collaboration with the J’s Special Needs Department, the week-long Festival offers special programming that goes beyond film. Engaging programs, in addition to thought-provoking film, bring together the community to explore, discuss, embrace, and celebrate the diversity of our shared human experience.

The program provides families with the opportunity to practice entering the airport, obtain boarding passes, go through security and board a plane. Formed Families Forward Annual Professional Workshop - From Trauma to Resiliency: Building Trauma-Informed Schools and Communities

The workshop will build upon participants' understanding of the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and toxic stress on early brain development and implications for learning. The principles of trauma-responsive care and student social and emotional health will be addressed - providing participants with the tools to create systemic changes promoting environments conducive to the learning needs of all students. Because "stressed brains can't learn", this session will focus on strategies to support the individual student who may be struggling socially, emotionally and/or academically due to the effects of trauma. Drawing upon the most recent work on attachment, regulation and skill development, participants will be given the opportunity to apply their understanding to current challenges faced in the classroom.
