*Technology Sessions*
*Pathways to the Heart of Health Careers*
Are you interested in helping people or animals? Curious about how the body
works? Maybe you have considered a future health career. In this session,
youth will explore the different health careers and learn how to prepare
for these careers through high school and college. The session includes a
quick anatomy lesson about this engine of life, the heart, and students
will construct working stethoscopes to hear their own heartbeats.
*Renewable Energy*
Renewable energy sources are an important part of our environmental and
economic longevity. This workshop provides an overview of renewable energy
technologies. Youth will work in groups to create energy graphics, build
and test a solar or wind powered machine, and discuss implications for
renewable energy. Students will also discuss the different renewable energy
careers and gain insight into the job outlook in this field.
*Weather 101*
Learn what makes weather wet and wild! This workshop features videos which
showcase the devastating effects of tornadoes and severe weather. Students
will discuss natural disasters, analyze weather patterns to determine
potential tornado locations, develop a tornado safety plan and build a
barometer. The session will include careers paths and job outlooks in
meteorology, climate, and weather.
*Digital Photography: DSLR, Traditional Point & Shoot Cameras, Lenses,
Modes and More!*
Join the Best Buy Geek Squad as they use professional shooting techniques
combined with hands-on instruction to show teens how to use DSLR and
traditional point-and-shoot cameras to take world-class photographs. In
this hands-on session, students will learn basic portrait and lighting
techniques for use in various DSLR camera modes. They will also explore
professional shooting techniques for action and creative shots and
experiment with professional imaging software. Students will gain insight
into careers in photography, photojournalism, professional photo editing
and more!
*The Ultimate Gamer! Inside Video Gaming*
You play PlayStation every day, but do you really know how it works? In
this session, the Best Buy Geek Squad will use live demos to teach students
about the various gaming systems and demonstrate how graphic design and
computer programming impact the gaming experience. Students will explore
concepts such as open-source gaming and in-person reality. The Geek Squad
will also provide insight into how technical careers like graphic design,
programming, software testers, and animators come together to create the
finished product - your favorite game.
*3-2-1 Blast Off!*
Launching into space is an amazing feat. How do we know we can get where we
want to go? Engineering design is important to helping us reach our goals.
In this Get Into STEM class, students in small groups of 2-3 will design
and build a straw rocket and maximize its flight time. Students will learn
how launch angle, force, and rocket length affect the flight distance of a
straw rocket.
*Attack of the Drones*
Flying a drone in itself is a learning process but with enough persistence
and patience, they can be a lot of fun! Drones can also be powerful for
developing hand-eye coordination skills as well as a potential spark for a
lifelong fascination of flight and the science behind it. In this session,
The Best Buy Geek Squad will teach students how to navigate drones.
Students will also explore ways that drones are used in various careers
including photo and video recording in wildlife, engineering, architecture,
aviation, military, and sports.
*Computer Networking and Internet Connectivity*
95% of all teens ages 12-17 are now online but few know the wide range of
skills required to keep a computer network up and running. Join Best Buy
Geek Squad members as they teach teens the ins and outs of in-home computer
networking. Teens will learn how various factors impact high-speed
internet access for all the devices that can be connected wirelessly within
a home. The Geek Squad will also explain how to navigate careers in
networking and computer systems administration.
