Youth Leadership Forum:
Are you a rising Junior or Senior in high school? Youth Leadership Forum is a unique leadership program for high school students with a disability. If selected to participate you will spend 5 days on a college campus and participate in leadership training activities, explore career and life goals, network, develop information resources, and explore the latest assistive technology. The Virginia Board for People with Disabilities covers all YLF expenses. The deadline to receive applications is 5:00 p.m. on March 29, 2013. Interested in further developing your leadership skills? Partners in Policymaking:
Are you the parent or guardian of a child with a developmental disability? Join other parents and self advocates one weekend a month from Sept.2013-May 2014. During PIP’s monthly training sessions (one Fri. and Sat. a month all expenses paid), you will learn about several different topics that impact your child’s life including but not limited to: interacting with legislators, the special education system, Medicaid waivers, employment, independent living, and being the best advocate you can be. The deadline for receipt of applications is 5:00 p.m. on April 30, 2013.

FCPS Presents: The 8th Annual Special Education Conference: Parents + Educators + Students = Success
The 8th Annual Special Education Conference: Parents + Educators + Students = Success
will be held on March 2, 2013, at Hayfield Secondary School from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The keynote presentation will be delivered by Dr. Robert Brooks, a nationally known author and public speaker on the themes of resilience and motivation for students with special needs. FCPS staff, Ann Dolin, Samantha Hollins, Dr. Lauren Kenworthy, Dr. Nancy Lee, Tracy Lewis, and Dr. Audrey Thurm will also present a variety of workshops for families and educators of students who receive special education services in Fairfax County Public Schools.
FCPS middle and high school-age students who receive special education services can attend the conference with their parents and participate in a strand of workshops and activities designed specifically for students.

On January 31st, BSW will welcome Neuroscientist and Author of Teen Brain Teen Mind, Dr. Ron Clavier, for the first in an exciting program of expert speakers.
Dr. Clavier’s insightful and illuminating lecture, Understanding the Teenage Brain, demonstrates that an understanding of the teenage brain is the key to unlocking the mysteries of why teens think and act the way they do. His own deep understanding of human brain development allows him to show how neurological changes in a young person’s developing brain underlie many behaviors and emotions.
Illustrating his ideas with examples and observations, he provides coping tips and strategies for young people and their families, easing tensions and improving communications to make the adolescent years healthier and more productive.
Dr. Clavier is skilled in making connections between science and society, and making scientific concepts easy to understand. An experienced and dynamic speaker, he is honest, funny and down-to-earth. His talks have been enjoyed by teenagers, parents and educators all over the world.
Dr. Clavier’s work is informed by a background in neuroscience, biochemical psychiatry and clinical psychology. From Montreal, he achieved his Doctorate in Experimental and Physiological Psychology before completing Postdoctoral training in Biochemical Psychiatry. He taught anatomy and psychology in medical schools before opening his own clinical psychology practice. He also consults in the corporate, law enforcement, community, health and education sectors, advising those who work with young people. Through his television series Adolescence: The Stormy Decade(2001-2007) and his writing, he helps teenagers, their families and those working with teens.

“Resiliency in Action: How Families, Schools, and Communities Create “Bounce Back”
from FAIRFAX COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is hosting a presentation by resiliency expert Nan Henderson who will talk about “Resiliency in Action: How Families, Schools, and Communities Create “Bounce Back” Kids on Tuesday, January 29, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Robinson Secondary School, cafeteria. This free presentation is for parents, school staff, and community members.
Ms. Henderson’s presentation is in conjunction with the resiliency program developed by the FCPS Department of Special Services (DSS) in collaboration with Fairfax County government, and several youth community groups. This program focuses on three areas: bullying prevention and intervention, suicide prevention and how children can deal with depression, and crisis situations. The FCPS program utilizes the resources of its school psychologists, social workers, and counselors to help students develop the traits resilient individuals possess to “bounce back” and overcome life’s challenges.
